A roadmap is a communication tool. It connects what a business hopes to achieve with the problems a product team is choosing to solve next.
Start with outcomes, not output.
Features are not strategy. A strong roadmap names the customer or business outcome you want to improve, gives the team room to find the best solution, and makes the trade-offs visible.
Make uncertainty explicit.
The further out an initiative sits, the more honest the roadmap should be about what is still unknown. Use themes and opportunities for the future; reserve specific delivery commitments for work that has been explored.
Keep it alive.
Review the roadmap with evidence from customers, delivery and the market. A roadmap that cannot change stops being a guide and becomes a constraint.
